PE 3
Reflections, PE2
In PE2 I chose to focus on becoming less hesitant in speaking. I think that while I've improved in this regard somewhat it could still use some work. I also have noticed some errors that appear in my speech when I try to speak with less hesitation, which I should work on correcting.
Goals, PE3

Goals, PE3
- continue to improve my confidence
- work on correcting errors while speaking (for example, using the wrong tense)
- fix overall sentence pitch
- attend language table and JSA dinners
- spend some time speaking with Japanese-speaking friends

PE2
Reflections, PE1
For my first PE cycle, I chose the goal of becoming more confident in speaking and in reading aloud. I chose some activities - language table, shadowing - that I thought would give me practice with this. I did most of what I set out for myself to do, although I did have to miss one of the language tables during the cycle.
I think I've gotten better at the speaking from text just by having more practice reading hiragana and katakana, but I'd still like to work on free speech. I think my pronunciation and intonation is reasonable for the moment, but I've found that, even when I kow the relevant grammar and vocabulary, I have some difficulty speaking without pauses when I'm forming sentences rather than reading aloud.
Goals, PE2:
- try to become more comfortable speaking, with less hesitation - particularly when assembling sentences (choosing particles, etc.)
Activities, PE2:
- attend language table each week
- try to use what I know with my roommates in daily life
- listen to and, if appropriate, shadow 15-30 minutes of Japanese speech (anime, conversation, songs, etc.) total each week

はじめまして
I've just begun studying Japanese, after years of waiting. I watch anime and read manga, and it will be nice to be able to read and understand the original material without relying on a translator. I'm also planning in going abroad, either during the summer or the year after I graduate, and I would love to be able to go to Japan.
I haven't studied a modern language since middle school - Latin and ancient Greek don't involve much of a verbal component. I'm excited to see what it will be like to be able speak a new language, but also a little worried that I'll have trouble with it. It's been a little bit hard for me to speak up enough when I'm afraid that I'm saying something wrong. Have patience with me, please! That said, since the beginning of the year I've added another goal for this class - to be able to understand and join in the conversations among the 5 out of 7 of my roommates who are (at least roughly) fluent in Japanese. I think that will be a good motivation.
Till next time,
Carton
